The MAD Formula

Lets say we have a dataset that looks like this: 3, 1, 4, 5, 9.

First we find the mean of the dataset.

$\frac{3+1+4+5+9}{5} = 4.4$

Next we must find how far away the other numbers are away from the mean (by subtracting them from the mean), then make the postive (Absolute Value). After we do that we add all of the values we just caluclated and divide them by how many values there were in the dataset. You are done!

$\frac{|4.4-3|+|4.4-1|+|4.4-4|+|4.4-5|+|4.4-9|}{5} = 2.08$
